What Will Google Buy Next?

If you aren't aware, Google likes to buy things. A lot of things. Whether or not it is to eliminate the competition or to actually better their products, some people believe that these acquisitions go against the Google motto, "don't be evil". In the past I can say I would have agreed. Not entirely in a bad way, (I still love you Google) but there were times I thought their purchasing was somewhat unethical.

Mobile Web Usage is Growing Faster than Google Expected

Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google, recently did a keynote in which he described the rate at which mobile device usage is growing, and moreover how folks are turning to the mobile web for information, entertainment and shopping faster than anyone at Google expected. There are certain topics in the tech industry as it relates to small businesses that are "sometime soon" topics. What I mean by that is there are some awesome tools that a small business can apply now to jump ahead of the curve (and benefit greatly as a result), things like QR codes, location-based services and tablet computing devices like the iPad. Then there are more pertinent aspects of the web and technology that, if you haven't already explored or developed a strategy for you're missing the boat. The most obvious among these are establishing a brand on the most popular social networks, but now more than ever it's increasingly important to have a mobile strategy...after all, that's how your customers and prospects are trying ...

Being #1 In Google May Mean You're #1 in Bing

I read an interesting article on Search Engine Land today that may impact some of our clients' rankings in Bing. According to the article, Bing has been mining Google search results to enhance their own search results. What the heck does that mean you ask? Think of it like cheating on a test, where you look at your neighbor's answers to fill in your test answers. The theory that Google has tested and says they have verified indicates that Microsoft is using Internet Explorer's suggested sites feature and the Bing search bar to monitor what users search for in Google, and show the same 1st search result in Bing. I Don't Care Whether It's Right Or Wrong The article debates whether what Microsoft is allegedly doing is illegal, right, wrong, etc... If you look at what Google has done with their image search results display, they basically copied Bing's. While I think it is both sneaky and clever at the same time, I don't particularly care. All that matters to me is that our SEO clients' ...

With Google nipping at the heels of Groupon, a socially-aware "deal of the day" website that provides its users with 1 amazing deal in their city everyday, and with Amazon having just invested in Groupon's top competitor LivingSocial, it would seem that location-based deals are the next big thing when it comes to online retail opportunities. You might be interested in taking advantage of the deals either website is offering, but more importantly if you're a small business owner this is an excellent opportunity to gain new customers.
